College to celebrate Earth Day-Community Day with a variety of environment-themed events

For immediate release NEW LONDON, Conn. - Connecticut College will celebrate Earth Day-Community Day with a variety of events for children and adults on the college green from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on April 21. The rain date is April 22.

This event is free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:

- 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. - "Reuse-A-Shoe" old shoe collection hosted by Pine Point School. Please bring your old sneakers or athletic shoes to recycle.

- 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. - Mystic Aquarium marine animal touch tank

- Every half hour between 11:30 a.m. - 3 p.m. - 10-minute talks on various topics of interest hosted by the Connecticut College Arboretum

- 11:45 a.m. - Songs of the Earth by folk singer Geoff Kaufman

- 12:30 p.m. - New London Public School Poetry contest winners announced - sponsored by the Sierra Club and the Connecticut College Arboretum

- 12:45 p.m. - Earth salsa dance lessons taught by 2006 Connecticut College alumna Natasja Eerens

- 1 p.m. - Mystic Paper Beasts on Parade

- 1:45 p.m. - Circle Dance, with drumming, led by the Connecticut College Department of Dance

- 2:00 p.m. - Guided arboretum tour for children

- 2:45 p.m. - Highlights of the First Annual Environmental Conference for New London Schools, hosted by the Regional Multicultural Magnet School

- 3:00 p.m. - Guided arboretum tour for children

- 3:15 p.m. - Songs of the Earth by folk singer Geoff Kaufman

Additionally, vendors and organizations will be on site throughout the day with displays, including Above Elite Studios, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Sustainability Club, Connecticut Clean Energy Fund, Connecticut College Renewable Energy Club, CC SAVE (Students Against Violence to the Environment), the Connecticut Fund for the Environment/Save the Sound, Flavours of Life, Fiddleheads Natural Foods Co-op, FRESH New London, the New London Earth Day Group, the Norwich Area Global Warming Action Group, Pine Point School, Project Oceanology, Reforest the Tropics, the Regional Multicultural Magnet School, Shaklee Corporation, the Sierra Club, Smith Barney, SolarWrights, Inc., Southeastern CT Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority (SCRRRA), Urban Eden Soap Company, Wild Ones, and others.
