Kurt Brown ´03: SGA President
Kurt Brown ´03, SGA president
November 22, 2002
Kurt Brown '03 first became involved with student government in high school. After coming to Connecticut College, he served as a member of the Student Activities Council, as a House Governor and, last year, as junior class president. This year, Kurt was voted President of the Student Government Association (SGA), one of the most influential positions in the college's system of shared governance.
"My real entrance into student government was with the Priorities, Planning and Budget Committee my sophomore year," he said. Comprised of senior administrators, faculty members and students, this committee prepares a budget that goes for approval directly to President Fainstein and the Board of Trustees. "Among the recent things that we've been working on is a list of capital, core endowment and programmatic projects for the college," Kurt said.
Kurt oversees or holds appointments on several other committees, such as the Educational Planning Committee and the Judicial System Task Force. In addition, he presides over the execution of the three major Issues Projects set by the SGA this year.
"It is rare to find an SGA president who is able to both produce results and receive such a high level of personal respect from Assembly members," says David Milstone, Dean of Student Life. "Kurt is honest and genuine and sees everyone as being part of solving problems."
The Melrose, Mass.-native is double-majoring in English and American Studies with a focus on American popular culture. Kurt is doing an independent study on new men's health initiatives in the public health field and completed an internship at the Department of Public Health in Boston last summer. He plans to attend law school after graduation.
But even when he has the opportunity to talk about himself, Kurt remains focused on his responsibilities as a representative of the student body: "What I really want to get across is the fact that every student's opinion is looked at and considered. In Student Government we've set high standards for ourselves. We know that we're liaisons between the students and the rest of the college. That's important!"
