In an undertaking unique for a small liberal arts college, four full-length musicals will be presented in one weekend - Jan. 25, 26 and 27 - in Tansill Theater. "Nunsense," "A Man of No Importance" and "Birds of Paradise" will be performed by Connecticut College students. "Money," will be performed by a four-member undergraduate cast from Trinity College. All four shows will be directed by Gerald Moshell, visiting professor of music and theater, who made the statement that four such shows being performed in one weekend is a unique undertaking for a small college like Connecticut College.
The musicals are the result of an expanded musical theater course offering this year, made possible in part by the Dayton Artist-in-Residence program. The program, funded by The Oakleaf Endowment Trust for Connecticut College, enables students to learn from performers who are not typically accessible in an academic setting. This year, the theater department is using the program to bring in a variety of artists to encourage students to explore the wide variety of styles and genres that make up musical theater.
The performances are free and open to the public. Seating is limited, however, so plan to arrive early.
The performance schedule is as follows: Thursday, Jan. 25 6:30 p.m. "Nunsense," a musical about five nuns performing to raise money for their sister nuns. 8:30 p.m. "A Man of No Importance," about an early 1960s community theatre group that encounters resistance from church authorities while attempting to perform a somewhat salacious play.
Friday, Jan. 26 6:30 p.m. "Money," a play about a wealthy man who attempts to find a job in order to feel useful. 8:30 p.m. "Birds of Paradise," in which a group attempts a weird musical-theatre production while the play's composer and author clashes with the visiting Broadway director and star of the performance,
Sat., Jan. 27 "Money," 1 p.m. "Birds of Paradise," 3 p.m. "Nunsense," 6:30 p.m. "A Man of No Importance," 8:30 p.m.
