New developments in stem cell and cloning research provide great potential for treating human diseases and injuries yet they also raise many ethical dilemmas.
"Embryonic Stem Cells, Cloning and Beyond: Challenges of Regulating Innovations at the Convergence of Genetics and Reproduction" is the topic of a panel discussion that will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 9
The discussion, which is free and open to the public, will take place in Room 210 of the Blaustein Humanities Center at 11:50 a.m.
Panel participants will include:
• Jon Beckwith, American Cancer Society Research Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Harvard Medical School;
• Roger Gosden, professor of reproductive medicine at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine, director of research in reproductive biology at the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Infertility, and professor of reproductive medicine in obstetrics and gynecology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University;
• Laura Grabel, the Fisk Professor of Natural Sciences in the Biology Department at Wesleyan University;
• Josephine Johnston, associate for ethics, law and society and director of education at The Hastings Center; and
• Erik Parens, senior research scholar at The Hastings Center and an adjunct associate professor in the Program in Science, Technology, and Society of Vassar College.
The panel will focus on the ways societal discussions and governmental policies can support the potential positive gains yet limit negative outcomes and discuss knowledge gained from the regulation of recombinant DNA and in vitro reproduction technologies that may help address the issues raised by stem cells and cloning.
The event is sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Connecticut College Department of Biology.
